The Transfiguration of Christ

Jesus had gone with his disciples Peter, James, and John to Mount Tabor. Christ's appearance was changed while they watched into a glorious radiant figure. There appeared Elijah and Moses, speaking with Jesus. The disciples were amazed and terribly afraid.

This event shows forth the divinity of Christ, so that the disciples would understand after his Ascension that He was truly the radiant splendor of the Father, and that his Passion was voluntary (Mark 9:2-9). It also shows the possibility of our own theosis as we follow His commandments and exercise purity of heart.

Elijah - our fiery air warrior, who was taken up on a flaming chariot (2 Kings 2:11) appears as a witness of eternal life with God.

Moses - the holy prophet of God, appears as well, witnessing the eternal life after death (Jude 1:9)* and mystical translation into heaven.

The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on 6th of August.

The event of the Transfiguration is recorded in three Gospels: Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28-36.

Hymns to the glorious the Transfiguration of Christ

Troparion
You were Transfigured on the Mount, O Christ God,
Revealing Your glory to Your disciples as far as they could bear it.
Let Your everlasting Light shine upon us sinners!
Through the prayers of the Theotokos, O Giver of Light, glory to You!

Kontakion
On the Mountain You were Transfigured, O Christ God,
And Your disciples beheld Your glory as far as they could see it;
So that when they would behold You crucified,
They would understand that Your suffering was voluntary,
And would proclaim to the world,
That You are truly the Radiance of the Father

*Our early hierarch and Apostle Jude quotes a book (probably "The Assumption of Moses") which we do not have in our Holy Books -- aka Bible, however, this fragment is given to us for a purpose of believing and attaining the unity with Christ - God the Son, and in Him with God the Holy Spirit and God the Father. Our Apostle also quotes our prophet Enoch (Jude 14-15) -- from the book of Enoch 1:9.
