The Holy Fire at St. Mary of Egypt Church in Greenwood

The Holy Fire will arrive here, at St. Mary of Egypt, just before 10:00 a.m. this Sunday.

We will receive the Holy Fire into the church reverently as we prepare for the liturgy.

We encourage you to bring something to keep this miraculous flame alive and protected, for transport to your home to be placed in your icon corner. That may involve some planning on your part, possibly using some type of lantern, or something to maintain and protect the flame until you can bring it home safely. We also have candles for sale.

In Christ's love,

Fr. A.

Come ye, take light from the Light
that is never overtaken by night.
Come and glorify Christ risen from the dead.

The Holy Icons

In the Orthodox tradition the icon is not merely an adornment in the church building or an object to be used in worship: people pray before it, they kiss it and treat it as a sacred object.

In spite of the existence of icons from distant antiquity there have at various times been tendencies opposed to the veneration of icons. In the seventh and eighth centuries these tendencies culminated in the iconoclast heresy that was condemned at the Seventh Ecumenical Council.

Master iconographer Vladimir Grigorenko speaks about his personal journey to Orthodox Christianity, the mission and practice of iconography, and the adornment of the dome of Holy Ascension Orthodox Church in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, with holy icons.

What is Great Lent?

“If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.”
– James 2:14-18

ALMSGIVING

In Christ’s teachings, almsgiving goes together with fasting and prayer. When one prays and fasts, one must show love through active generosity to others.

Prayer for weekdays of the Great Fast

Prayer of St. Ephrem the Syrian

O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk.

But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.

Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages.

Amen.

Behold a new and wondrous Mystery!

The Nativity Sermon of St. John Chrysostom

BEHOLD a new and wondrous mystery.

My ears resound to the Shepherd’s song, piping no soft melody, but chanting full forth a heavenly hymn. The Angels sing. The Archangels blend their voice in harmony. The Cherubim hymn their joyful praise. The Seraphim exalt His glory. All join to praise this holy feast, beholding the Godhead here on earth, and man in heaven. He Who is above, now for our redemption dwells here below; and he that was lowly is by divine mercy raised.
